This historic building is another Chisago County
museum site which holds artifacts from the Sunrise
community and surrounding area.
The Sunrise Museum was built in 1861 as a single-
room school house. It later served as the Sunrise
town hall and today is still used as a voting precint
location for the community on election days.
The town status of Sunrise vanished after its post
office was closed but it will always retain the honor
of being the birthplace of actor Richard Widmark.
A historical marker has been placed to
commemorate his birthplace.
Another historic figure who called Surise home
was Presidential hopeful Frank O Lowden. His
father, Lorenzo Lowden helped build this original
school house but he later removed his family from
Son Frank would rise to serve as the Governor of
Illinois from 1917 until 1921 and would return to
Sunrise in 1920 to announce his candidacy for the
office of President. He lost the nomination to
Warren Harding, who would go on to become the
29th President of the United States.
